Passing on the Fire
A non-stopping culture going on
As a comprehensive university, Dong Hwa has 8 different academic fields and over 20 departments. It is rare for a Taiwanese university to contain so many specializations. Furthermore, Dong Hwa is the only national university that has a college of indigenous studies!
Taiwan is rich in indigenous culture, and Hualien plays an important role in said culture. Dong Hwa has quite a lot of student associations of different tribes like Hualien Tsou and Bunun (Bunun, Tsou, Hla'alua, Kanakanavu), Maqacuvucuvung (Rukai, Paiwan), Puyuma, Amis, Ptasan (Atayal, Taroko, Sediq ), etc.
Festival is an essential part of their life, the university has held Inholawan (Weeding Festival) of the Puyuma tribe before, and the students have held Malahodaigian (Ear-shooting Festival) of the Bunun tribe. Normally the student associations hold their own activities and handover ceremonies.
The student associations always welcome anyone who would like to participate in the festivals, participants do not have to be of indigenous origin or come from the same tribe. If you are highly interested in their culture, don't be shy and go ask for more information!
